This Week 2015/16

Week beginning Monday 11th July
This week we will be reading the story of 'The Rainbow Fish.' This story about friendships fits in well with our integration with the nursery children over the next few weeks.
Miss Marsden's class will be meeting Miss Rowles on Monday and Miss Perry's class will meet with their new teacher on Monday 18th July.
This week we will be tasting different flavoured sorbet.
Week beginning Monday 4th July
Following on from our farm visit our story this week will be 'A Squash and a Squeeze.'
In the playdough we will me making our own cows to fit in the old woman's house.
In the creative area we will be making houses for the different farm animals.
In tasting we will be talking about how cheese is made and tasting our own cheese on crackers.
Week beginning Monday 27th June
This week our story will be 'The Pig in the Pond.' We will be re-telling the story using the farm yard story tray.
In Maths we are continuing to use our number knowledge to solve problems.
We are using non-fiction books to learn more about the farm animals that we will be visiting on Friday.
This week in tasting we will be trying ice cream and talking about how it is made.
Week beginning Monday 20th June
Our story this week will be 'Giant Jelly Jaws and the Pirates' by Helen Baugh.
In Literacy we will be writing a description of a pirate, we will also be making our own treasure maps.
In Maths we will be continuing to learn to count in twos, fives and tens and using this to problem solve.
Just a reminder that children must have their P.E kits with their coloured t-shirts ready for sports day on Wednesday.
Class photographs will be on Wednesday.
Week beginning Monday 13th June
This week we are staring our mini topic on pirates. Our story this week is 'Class Three All at Sea' by Julia Jarman.
In Literacy we are working on our writing. We are focusing particularly on using our phonics to write the words independently.
In Maths we are working on counting in twos, fives and tens.
We will be opening a number of new areas in our classroom including an ice cream shop and a beach and BBQ area.
For tasting we will be trying neapolitan ice cream. We will be making a graph to decided which flavour is our favourite.
Week beginning Monday 23rd May
This week we are learning about spiders. Our fiction book this week is 'The Very Busy Spider' by Eric Carle.
In Funky Fingers we are making our own spiders as well as using tweezers to get the spiders out of the web. In our story tray we have the characters from the story so that we can act it out to each other.
In maths we are looking at problem solving by sharing objects equally.
In celebration of the Queens birthday we will be tasting strawberries and cream.
If the weather holds we will be practicing our sports day ready for our June event.
Please remember on Friday the children can come dressed in red, white and blue.
Week beginning - Monday 16th May
This week we are learning about ladybirds. We will be reading both fiction and non-fiction books. Our fiction book this week is "What the ladybird heard' we are using a variety of non-fiction texts we are also encouraging the children to find out their own facts in the reading area. We are having a big focus on writing and there will be opportunities to write facts about their favourite minibeast.
In maths we are learning to double numbers up to 10 using the ladybird spots. We will also be continuing with addition and subtraction.
On Thursday we will be celebrating Spanish and Art day. We will be taking part in Spanish dancing and learning some Spanish rhymes. Tasting this week will be Spanish omelette.
Week beginning - Monday 9th May
This week we are learning about bees and their environment. Our story this week is 'The Very Greedy Bee' alongside the 'Bees and Wasps' non-fiction book. In literacy we will be learning facts about bees and the children will participate in shared writing activities.
In maths we are working with numbers up to 20 recognising, ordering and writing them using the correct formation.
This week we will be tasting honey on wholemeal bread to link with our topic.
Your children are showing great improvement in their reading and writing and we would really appreciate your help continuing this at home.
Week beginning - Tuesday 3rd May
Following on from our theme on caterpillars and butterflies this weeks story is 'Monkey Puzzle' a rhyming story about how the butterfly helps the monkey find his mum. We are also continuing to research about butterflies using our non fiction text.
In maths we are continuing with subtraction.
Please remember the school is closed to children on Thursday due to polling day.
Week beginning - Monday 25th April
This week we are starting our topic minibeasts by reading the popular story of 'The Hungry Caterpillar' by Eric Carle. We will be contrasting this with a non-fiction book about butterflies.
In literacy we are going to write our favourite part of the story using our phonetic knowledge.
In maths we are introducing subtraction using the terms 'less' 'takeaway' and subtract.
In tasting we will be making our own fruit salad and talking about our fruit preferences.

We are not in school on Monday 2nd May as it is a bank holiday also children will not be in school on Thursday 5th due to the Polling day.
Week beginning - Monday 18th April
This week we are celebrating the Queen's 90th birthday by reading the Birthday Crown and The Queen's Knickers. We will be learning a little about who the Queen is aswell as designing her a new birthday crown and a pair of birthday knickers!
This week we are starting our super sentences. Each morning when we come into school we will be practicing writing sentences on our whiteboards. At the end of the week the child who has shown the most improvement will get to wear our superhero super sentence writer cape for the day. We will also be sharing any holiday news/ pictures that the children have completed over the holiday.
Week beginning - Tuesday 29th March
Our final traditional story this week is Jack and the Beanstalk. In phonics we are assessing the childrens sound knowledge. We are reinforcing the triagraphs ure, air, ear and igh. We are learning to read the tricky word 'all' and 'are'.
In maths we are introducing money. We will be looking at 1p, 2p, 5p, and 10p coins and the different ways of using the coins to make 10p.
This week we will be tasting Simnel cake in celebration of easter.
On Friday the children may come in their own clothes, donations brought in will be given to UNICEF. We will then be breaking up for 2 weeks holiday and will return on Monday 18th April.
Week beginning - Monday 21st March
Our traditional story this week is Little Red Riding Hood. In phonics we are looking at the sound 'ure'. We are learning to read the tricky words 'they' and 'her'.
We are also looking at Spring and Easter this week. We have lots of fun egg related activites to help us with both maths and phonics.
In maths we are reinforcing one more and one less and comparing numbers up to 20.
In the creative area we are using pastels to create observational drawings of spring flowers.
On Wednesday the Friends of Woodheys will be hosting a chocolate tombola. The children are allowed to bring up to £2 and we will take them to buy their tickets. This makes a wonderful number recognition session.
We will be discussing the idea of hot cross buns and in tasting we will try and guess what ingredients are in them.
Week beginning - Monday 14th March
This week we are reading the story of The Three Little Pigs. We will be pretending to be the characters from the story and asking each other questions. Our sounds this week are ow, ear and air. We will be learning the tricky word they.
In Maths we will be looking at naming 3d shapes and describing their properties.
This week is science week in school. We are looking at different materials to make the pigs house waterproof. We are also predicting which house will be the strongest.
In tasting we are looking at the country Mexico we will be tasting tortilla chips with salsa and guacamole.
Week beginning - Monday 7th March
This week in Literacy we are reading the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We will be retelling the story using the small world tray. Our new sounds this week will ur, oi, ow. We will be learning to spell the tricky words no and go.
In Maths we will be using the scales to balance objects. We will also be continuing with adding two numbers together by counting on.
P.E is on Tuesday so please remember your P.E kits. If you have not brought your wellingtons and waterproofs back after the holiday then please try and remember them.
This week we will be tasting some troll soup (pea soup).
All parents evening times for Miss Perry have now been sent home. Please feel free to come and ask if you are unsure of your time.

Week beginning - Monday 29th February
This week in Literacy we are looking at the story of Goldilocks and the three bears. We will be focusing on letter writing. There will be a letter to read from baby bear and we will be writing a letter from Goldilocks as a class.
In Maths we are looking at counting on from a given number as well as sequencing the days of the week.
In tasting we will be trying porridge and using a pictogram to look at how many children liked it.
On Thursday we will be celebrating World Book Day. We are all looking forward to seeing the children's costumes.
The book fair will be running all week in the hall along with many other book inspired activities.
Week beginning - Monday 22nd February
This week we will start our Once Upon a Time topic with the story of The Gingerbread Man.
In Literacy we will be re-telling the story and looking at the use of speech bubbles. During our phonics sessions we will be reinforcing all the sounds that we have learnt within phase 3 so far. We are learning how to read and write them.
In Maths we are continuing with addition and looking at different ways of making ten.
This week we will be starting P.E in the studio please remember to bring in your kit.
