Welcome to Year Six

We would like to tell you all about Year Six and the exciting things we do. This year we will be using Parenthub to update you and keep everyone informed of the exciting things Year Six have been doing. Parenthub will be launched after half term so for the time being we will be using twitter and the monthly newsletter to share our learning.

Meet our Year Six Staff Team

Year Six News Updates

Well, the half-term feels like it has passed in the blink of an eye but what a lovely half-term it has been. The children have made a great start to Year Six and we are looking forward to seeing what the next half-term will bring.

We have given the children a short reading task for the English homework this half-term (in addition to their maths homework, spelling and usual daily reading). However, for those who may wish to keep busy or push themselves to do a little more, we have set some 'optional extra' tasks on Education City.

We hope everybody has a fantastic and restful break!

Mrs Fenney

Wow! What a fabulous week we have had! We have finished our Christmas card designs (more information will be sent out about these in the near future); used a 2 point perspective to design and draw our own buildings; and delved even deeper into our Viking topic. The Viking day was a huge success and we were so pleased with the tremendous effort the children put in to their projects - see below for pictures of some truly outstanding examples. We put our baking skills to the test by making Viking flatbread and used clay to make some Viking-style coins. Thank you to each child for their excellent contributions to the day.

York trip - We will be finalising our numbers for the York trip at the end of next week. Just a gentle reminder that if we have not yet received them, we will require your child's permission slip and deposit by Friday 18th October in order to secure their place on the trip. Thank you in advance.

We have seen some great times tables improvements in Mrs Fenney's maths group this week. We would like to give a special mention to the following children:

  • Chloe T. for improving her score by 15 points
  • Danny for a 10 point improvement on his tables challenge
  • Sarrinah who smashed last week's score and scored an additional 27 points!

Amazing job, Year Six! Keep up the good work.

Mrs Fenney

We have had a great week writing all about our creature creations within our non-chronological reports. Using a range of scientific vocabulary, we have described many characteristics of our curious critters. We can't wait to see all of the final versions!

The Times Tables Rock Stars battle between Year Five and Six was nothing short of epic this week. In perhaps the biggest come back of the century, Year Six were the overall winners and scored a massive 82,000 points. A huge well done to everyone who worked so hard on their times tables this week!

As we have asked the children to complete a slightly more in-depth piece of homework this week, their Viking projects, we have not set any additional maths homework. However, we would still like the children to keep practising their times tables on Times Tables Rock Stars.

Just a little reminder that it is history day on Thursday next week. Although it is not compulsory, we do encourage the children to dress up and get into the full spirit of the day. Please feel free to speak to us if you have any issues with costumes - we will do out best to help.

Thank you for all of the York trip reply slips we have received far - the response has been very positive. If your child still has not brought in their slip, please can they bring it in next week. This will enable us to finalise numbers with the booking company.

Please note: from next week, Miss Seddon's class will also be completing their weekly spelling tests on a Thursday morning. A Parent Mail has gone out about this.

Preparations for the 2020 York trip are underway and a letter has been given to each child outlining further details. You can access a copy of the letter by clicking the link below:

York Trip Letter - March 2020

This has now been added to Parent Pay and payments can be made from today. If you have any questions regarding the trip or payment, please do not hesitate to contact us.

The children in Mrs Fenney's class have been informed that they will now be doing their weekly spelling tests on a Thursday morning. This is to try and make the most effective use of time throughout the week.

Mrs Fenney

It has been a very exciting week in Year Six as the elections and job selection process were in full swing. We would like to congratulate everybody who put themselves forward for a leadership position and delivered a speech to the rest of the year group - we were so proud of each and every candidate. It was an incredibly tough choice for the children to make and the votes were very close; however, today we informed the children who had been voted into each position and this will be announced to the rest of the school during Monday's assembly. We also shared the outcome of the job application process with the children - Mr Beisly is thrilled he now has a new team of mug collectors! Every child in Year Six now holds a position of responsibility and we are sure that they will do a great job in their roles. Well done, Year Six!

Mrs Fenney

Fabulous examples of Viking projects. Well done Year Six!

Coming November 2019!

At Woodheys we want to share as much as possible with parents and with this new app we hope to keep you up to date with your child’ learning.

Video about Parenthub

Homework will be set weekly - English, Maths and spellings with occasional topic work. Children should look at their homework over the weekend (even if it is not completed then) as we would like to help any children who feel they need a little more guidance or support. If children do need help, asking on a Monday or a Tuesday would be ideal because homework is due in on a Wednesday and will often be marked together as a learning activity.

Week beginning 28/10/2019

English - Reading comprehension

Mrs Fenney's maths group - Problem solving or subtraction consolidation

Miss Seddon's maths group - Education City

Times Tables Rock Stars - All children should practise their times tables on a weekly basis (even the quickest can still get quicker!) This week, the battle is between Mrs Fenney's maths group versus Miss Seddon's maths group. This should be an exciting competition!

Spellings - Children should complete the relevant week's spellings and bring in their spelling sheets on the day of their spelling tests.

Reading - Children should read for a minimum of 20 minutes each day and complete their assigned reading tasks.

Reading records - These should be kept updated and signed regularly by an adult at home. Adults can also write comments if they wish.

The children have a spelling test each week (unless otherwise stated) and we ask that they practise their spellings at home in order to consolidate their learning. Please note: the Year Six spelling tests will take place on a Thursday unless otherwise stated.

A list of 100 Recommended Books for Year Five and Six Children

This is a list of suggested Year Five and Six texts. Please note: some of these texts are meant for the more mature reader. We would advise you to read an online synopsis of each book before purchasing or borrowing to ensure that you are happy for your child to child to read it. If your child would like to discuss any of the themes within these books, they are very welcome to speak to a member of the Upper Key Stage Two team.

Learning Resources

Here are a few suggested learning resources that the children can access at home:

An online version of the numbers game from Countdown. There is no timer so the children can practise using their number knowledge in a fun way.

A great resource which can help to improve the speed of calculations and knowledge of their times tables.

This is a great resource for recapping your mathematical knowledge. Mr Brett's favourite page is the puzzle page.

This website is particularly good for checking mathematical processes as it contains a large number of video explanations and examples.

A fantastic resource for practising techniques used in the SATs arithmetic paper.

We have a new subscription to Times Tables Rockstars which will help to improve tables skills. We hope you like it as much as we do!

A great resource for practising some of the more tricky aspects of Year Six S.P.A.G.

On Education City, children can access a range of activities linked to the English Curriculum.

If you are ever stuck for what to read, or want to get into a new author, then this is a great website which allows you to read extracts from a range of authors.

Education city is a fantastic resource where the children can access a range of challenges and lessons from the whole breadth of the Curriculum.

The BBC Primary website also has a great range of topic material, including video clips and various fun activities.
