Relationships, Sex & Health Education (RSHE)
Relationships Sex & Health Education (RSHE) is learning about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up, relationships, sex, human sexuality and sexual health.
Our approach to PSHE and RSHE
At Woodheys, we deliver our Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) through the Jigsaw programme. This is a carefully structured scheme that supports children’s emotional wellbeing, relationships, and personal development. Through Jigsaw, RSHE is taught in a gradual, age-appropriate way across the school. The main RSHE-related content is delivered within the “Relationships” and “Changing Me” units.
- The “Relationships” unit is typically taught in the spring/summer term, focusing on friendships, family relationships, respect, and personal boundaries.
- The “Changing Me” unit is usually taught in the summer term, and includes learning about growing up, changes in the body, and in Year 5 and Year 6 only, an introduction to puberty and how babies are conceived and born.
All lessons are delivered sensitively and in a way that is appropriate to the age and understanding of the children.
Year 5 and Year 6 only - Parental right to withdraw
Relationships Education is statutory in all primary schools, and parents do not have the right to withdraw their child from these lessons. However, parents do have the right to withdraw their child from the sex education elements of the “Changing Me” units in Year 5 and Year 6 (specifically lessons that go beyond the national curriculum for science, such as how babies are conceived).
An overview of the content that will be delivered in this unit of work can be found below. Prior to your child being taught these lessons – Year 5 and Year 6 teachers will send out a MS Forms to collect your decision about whether to withdraw your child from these lessons.
